Argument Selection and Alternations in German VP-Idioms

چکیده
In this paper I argue that inflection class membership among the so-called ‘primary’ verbs in Lithuanian, which has always been considered to be extremely idiosyncratic, is at least partly predictable from the verb’s semantics. The most important semantic parameters responsible for inflection class assignment are agentivity of the verb’s highest ranking participant (thus most transitive and agentive intransitive ‘primary’ verbs share the same morphological features whereas nonagentive intransitives fall into another inflectional class) and the inherent aspectual properties of the verb (intransitive verbs denoting atelic and telic processes fall into different classes). These semantic features are cross-linguistically recognized as relevant for ‘unaccusativity’ or ‘split intransitivity’; thus Lithuanian inflectional morphology may be subsumed under a typologically well-established pattern.

English Object Alternations: A Unified Account
A hallmark of the English verb lexicon is the availability of multiple argument realization options for many English verbs. Studies of the English verb lexicon have drawn attention to one facet of this phenomenon: the availability of a range of object alternations (Levin 1993)—alternate realizations of the VP-internal arguments of apparently triadic verbs. One of the best-known of these alterna...
متن کاملWord Order Constraints on German Verb Clusters
There is a broad concensus among researchers working within the paradigm of HPSG that argument-inheritance (Hinrichs and Nakazawa (1989; 1994)) is an essential operation in the analysis of so-called verb clusters in German. An argument-inheritance verb subcategorizes for an unsaturated verbal complement, and for all the complements on the COMPS-list of this verbal complement. In German, auxilia...
متن کاملArgument/oblique Alternations and the Structure of Lexical Meaning a Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Linguistics and the Committee on Graduate Studies of Stanford University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
This dissertation examines the semantic underpinnings of argument realization. Much recent work in argument realization is based on some notion of “prominence preservation,” wherein the morphosyntactic prominence of an argument in the clause (e.g. its grammatical relation) supposedly reflects its prominence in the meaning of the clause. I explore prominence preservation as it applies to crossli...
متن کاملUnsupervised Induction of Modern Standard Arabic Verb Classes and Alternations
Verbs (in lemma form) and syntactic frames are automatically extracted from the ATB.! In order to acquire an argument structure for the verbs,!I only considered structure that is internal to the maximal Verb Phrase (VP) projection of the verb. However, within the VP, all sisters of the verb are excluded except for those in a close semantic relationship to the verb.! This is facilitated by the f...
متن کاملProsodic Markings of Complex NP Focus, Syntax, and the Pre-/Post-focus String
The prosodic realization of focus can vary depending on various factors such as type of focus (e.g., information focus, corrective focus), morphosyntax (whether or not a language has a morpho-syntactic marker of focus), and intonational phonology of language, and thus is language-specific. On one hand, head-prominence languages such as English, German, and Greek, mark prominence through the use...
